Contact Hours and Independent Study
The total of the timetabled hours for the course is 45 hours per semesters. The convention is to have for each course two 1 hour & 30 minutes sessions per week over the course of the teaching period with opportunities for one-to-one meeting and group independent study.
Typically, the teaching period is likely to include one ‘flipped’ lecture, a lecture, one seminar, one-workshop plus small-group and/or individual tutorial occasions.
Given that the full-time student has undertaken an average of 15 credits per semester, which is 5 courses of three credits each, the total number of the direct contact for the five courses is 187.5 hours per semester.
In parallel, the student is expected to spend weekly for each course a minimum of two to three hours of independent study. Given that the direct contact for a course is 2.5 hours a week means that you should spend on independent academic work a total of 5 to 7.5 hours.
