Al Maaref University’s Fifth Translation Prize 2022

About
Four years after its launch, the Translation and Languages Department at Al Maaref University is pleased to announce the “Al Maaref University’s Fifth Translation Prize” for the year of 2022, in cooperation with the Arab Translators Association and sponsorship of Librairie du Liban Publishers (LDLP).
The contest, which has assembled nearly a thousand male and female students from about 30 public and private secondary schools, falls within the context of the World Arabic Language Day.
Objectives
This annual prize has established itself as a helping hand to secondary schools in their relentless quest to boost the status of the Arabic language as a mother tongue and honour linguistic excellence, by providing high school students the opportunity to uncover their latent linguistic talents and win grants ranging from 60 to 100% scholarships on majoring in Translation and Languages at MU.
Combinations
The prize includes four combinations, from which the student chooses only one. It targets students in the eleventh and twelfth grades. As for the combinations, they are: Arabic to English, Arabic to French, English to Arabic, or French to Arabic.
Registration
Interested students may register with no application fee via Al Maaref University website (click here to apply). During the contest, the applicant is required to translate or Arabize a paragraph of about 150 words within an hour, depending on the combination he previously chose when registering.
Assessment criteria
As means to achieve transparency and objectivity, the jury follows the double-blinded assessment policy for each submitted translation in which two proofreaders, instead of one, assess the papers anonymously, only having the candidature numbers, based on the following criteria:
a. Understanding the subtleties of the original text (45%),
b. Comprehending through a sound spelling, grammatical and eloquent language (45%),
c. Readability, smoothness and aesthetics of the translation (10%).
Likewise, the jury refers the translations shortlisted for the first places with close ranks to a third proofreader to determine the winners, and then names are revealed in preparation for results announcement.
Prizes
Winners of the first places in the four different combinations will receive a 100% scholarship, while the second and third place winners will receive 80% and 60% scholarships respectively at Al Maaref University (Department of Translation and Languages exclusively).
