Skills Curriculum
At MU all majors are built carefully to offer you directly or in an embedded way ‘skills curriculum’ to ensure that students are fully prepared for study and the world of work.
At level 1, ENG201 English Communication Skills I, ENG202 English Communication Skills II, ARB201 Arabic Communication Skills I, ARB202 Arabic Communication Skills II, and ENG220 English for Translation, prepare you to acquire the necessary linguistic knowledge needed for your first and second languages. Also, you will have a vital opportunity, through TRL200 History of Translation, to go over some basic translation methods and to critically think about issues related to the role of translation and translators in shaping culture and world view.
At level 2, the courses become focused on the major requirements. Each of them covers those core professional skills that are expected in the graduated students by the industry. The range of major courses enables the student to have a command on theory, however, in the context of professional practice. There is a minimum of 65% of the major courses geared in the curriculum for level 2 towards equipping the students for work in the industry. ENG260 Technical Writing in English (B), TRL240 Lexicology and Terminology for Translation, TRL300 Computer Tools and Applications for Translation, and TRL320 Theory and Practice for B-A Translation, are few examples of the courses role in enabling students to have a sound understanding and hands-on experience to certain dimensions of work in the translation industry.
At level 3 of the study, you are expected to have already acquired the necessary knowledge and skills from levels 1 and 2 in different translation methods, procedures, approaches and strategies. In this higher level 3, you are well prepared to take on board more specialized translation and a research-based project.
